Michigan

Thanks to the Biden Administration’s Inflation Reduction Act, Michigan isn’t just home to Motor City – it’s the epicenter of a vibrant clean energy economy that has the potential to not only elevate local businesses but also to make the United States the leading manufacturer of renewable energy.

With the Inflation Reduction Act, President Biden and Vice President Harris are building a clean, healthy, stable future at the center of Michigan’s working class and industrial populations.

Michigan has dove in head first to the incredible opportunities provided by the Inflation Reduction Act to set the audacious goal of transitioning off of carbon entirely by the year 2050, while creating good-paying, union represented jobs. According to a 2023 poll, the vast majority of Michiganders support transitioning to clean energy, and with leadership from Governor Gretchen Whitmer, the state is utilizing federal investments to do just that. So far, the state has announced billions of dollars in clean energy investments directed towards homegrown companies like Ford, Polar Racking, General Motors, and many more. With these funds, Michigan industries are making the Great Lakes State the national leader in the production of hydrogen cells, electric vehicles, and other clean energy technology, which are not only better for the environment but are improving health outcomes across the state. And Michigan is ensuring that the jobs created with Inflation Reduction Act funds are good paying, high quality jobs with union representation to ensure that workers have a seat at the table. Michigan is expected to create 160,000 new jobs with funds from the Inflation Reduction Act.

And while the Inflation Reduction Act is encouraging big industry to invest in renewable energy innovations, it’s also created significant grant and tax relief programs for small businesses. With the electric vehicle tax credits and workforce support from Biden’s law, small to midsize EV manufacturers, like Dunamis Clean Energy Partners and Dunamis Charge – the first African-American women-owned EV charger manufacturer in the world – are thriving. And small businesses interested in reaping the benefits of Michigan’s boom clean energy economy by making efficiency improvements to brick and mortar locations are saving thousands of dollars.

The economic impacts of these investments are being felt by Michiganders at the individual level already. Since being signed into law, the Inflation Reduction Act has begun to save homeowners and renters hundreds of dollars a year on energy costs; low income households are now buying new electric appliances, from heat pumps to stoves, at 0-50% cost; and households across the Mitten are building advanced rooftop solar systems to generate reliable, cost-effective energy at home.

Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, Michigan is paving the road for the clean energy revolution – one that will not only save our planet, but also create union jobs and exponentially better health outcomes for Michiganders.
