Enacted by President Joe Biden in June of 2022, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act is the first major federal gun safety bill passed in nearly 30 years. It’s already saving lives, by closing gun law loopholes, implementing new violence prevention policies, and making significant investments in school and community safety. As increasingly more Americans support stricter gun laws, including expanded background checks, red flag laws, and more, the Biden Administration is delivering results to keep communities safe while still respecting American’s second amendment rights. In addition to making progress on gun safety, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act also strengthens protections for survivors of domestic violence, creates more community-based violence intervention programs, and increases funding for schools across the U.S. to implement new safety measures and elevate mental healthcare.

In Nevada, the Bipartisan Safety Act is playing a key role in improving public safety in the wake of the 2017 Las Vegas shooting that killed 60 people and injured hundreds of others, making it one of the deadliest mass shootings in American history. Under the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the state is set to receive millions of dollars to drive various initiatives to improve safety and curb gun violence in communities across the Silver State. Most notably, the state has already received close $20 million to care for students experiencing mental health crises and struggling with substance abuse, improve school safety measures, and create afterschool programs to keep students off the streets and out of harm’s way. With this investment, the state aims to stop gun violence at its root causes, while also identifying statewide initiatives and legislation to create safer communities.

“Nevadans are horrified by the epidemic of gun violence that continues to steal away lives, devastate families and shatter communities across the country," Congressman Steven Horsford said in a statement after voting in favor of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. “I'm proud that Nevada is swiftly acting to deliver these grants to our communities.
