Painesville, Ohio, will replace a century-old coal-fired power plant with a solar farm and battery storage system, thanks to $80 million from an IRA Climate Pollution Reduction Grant. The solar farm will have a capacity of 35 megawatts, compared to the current plant's 20 megawatts, and is projected to save Painesville nearly $4 million a year. Furthermore, the grant also funds beautification efforts, extending a regional bike trail to reach Painesville residents.
The grant is the result of cooperation between elected officials in Painesville (Lake County) and officials in neighboring Cuyahoga County and the Cleveland city government. In addition to the funding for the new solar plant, Cuyahoga County and Cleveland will receive a combined $50 million, which will be used to install solar panels across the area."People from the East Side to the West Side will have more money in their pocket," said Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb, a NewDEAL Leader. "To save for a new down payment on a home, more money in their pocket to start that small business."
